CWRPs and Wildfire Risk reduction

A Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP) is a comprehensive, community-driven strategy aimed at reducing the risk and impact of wildfires in British Columbia. It builds on previous planning models by incorporating local wildfire risk assessments, public engagement, and FireSmart principles to guide proactive actions such as fuel management, emergency preparedness, and education. The plan supports collaboration between local governments, First Nations, and residents to enhance overall wildfire resilience and ensure long-term safety for communities in fire-prone areas.

Wildfire risk reduction (WRR) planning involves strategically managing forested landscapes to minimize the likelihood and impact of wildfires on communities, infrastructure, and natural resources. This includes assessing fire hazards, implementing fuel management treatments such as thinning, prescribed burns, and debris removal, and integrating traditional ecological knowledge, especially from Indigenous communities. The planning process considers local environmental conditions, climate change projections, and values-at-risk, and is guided by provincial frameworks like the BC Wildfire Risk Reduction Program. Collaborative efforts between governments, First Nations, industry, and communities are essential to developing effective, place-based strategies for long-term forest and fire resilience.
